China's Leather Industry Continues Growth Momentum with Innovations and International Expansion

2024-07-10

Beijing, China — The Chinese leather industry has maintained its robust growth trajectory, driven by relentless product innovation, brand cultivation, and strategic international expansion. According to recent data, revenue generated by large-scale leather, fur, feather, and footwear enterprises in China reached 398.21 billion yuan in the first half of 2024, marking a 5.6% year-on-year increase. Profits also surged, totaling 17.17 billion yuan, up 7.9% from the previous year.

These positive trends can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, the industry has prioritized technological advancements and digital transformation, leading to improved efficiency and competitiveness. Secondly, Chinese leather brands have been actively cultivating their international presence, with exports remaining strong despite global economic headwinds. While total leather product exports dipped slightly by 2.7% in the first half of 2024, exports to Russia bucked the trend, recording a significant 25.4% jump, highlighting the industry's adaptability and market diversification efforts.

Moreover, the industry has been bolstered by several key events. The China Leather Association (CLA) recently announced its 9th Quadrennial Council Expansion Meeting and the 6th Standing Council Meeting, scheduled for September 1-4, 2024, in Shanghai. The event, themed "Born to Innovate, Pursuing Quality," aims to propel the industry into a new era of development. Concurrently, the 15th Leather Industry Forum, the China International Leather Exhibition, and the International Tannery Industry Summit will be held, providing a platform for industry players to share insights and forge partnerships.

International collaborations have also been on the rise. For instance, the Asian Fashion Exhibition in Bangkok witnessed the participation of Chinese leather brands, fostering strong connections with Southeast Asian buyers. Additionally, the China Leather Association has been actively engaging with global associations, hosting events like the 37th Congress of the International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Societies (IULTCS) in Chengdu, China, in October 2023.
